I was doing a bit of research for a listing I made today on eBay, and found it amazing that this town has basically stayed almost untouched for over 100 years. The buildings look almost the same today as they did in 1911. Nice job maintaining your historical character Grand Rapids, Ohio!
On the political right, Trump's campaign slogan implies that America needs to be fixed. On the political left, political discourse can often make it sound like America is the most racist, mysogynistic, and unjust country on the planet. It has gotten so bad, in fact, that Canadians have even rallied to try to buoy the spirits of their neighbors to the south.

I teach high school social studies, this year to sophomore United States History students. It is a very difficult year to stand in front of students and try to provide a fair and balanced perspective. I can hear the disillusionment about government in the things they say to each other about the election, and I fear their generation may already be jaded about America's political process. And of course the rude debate styles and personally insulting rhetoric of the candidates for President are to blame. Or are they? Certainly there is an unprecedented level of animus between the candidates, but we as Americans are just as culpable for the prevailing attitude about our country.

This country was founded by “a bunch of old, privileged white guys” to be sure, but along the way we have fought to enfranchise more Americans, make working conditions better for employees, create safe places to live for our citizenry, and create an inclusive society. Yes, we have failed in many ways, but we have always been willing to confront our problems as a society and work to solve them, even if we are often unsuccessful at first. Even when Americans have attempted to block what many of us view as progress, it has been a vocal minority. Even today, a large portion of Trump’s supporters are not racists slathering at the mouth, but rather white, working class Americans frustrated that the changing global economy seems to have left them behind.

I am teaching my students about the turn of the twentieth century in the United States right now, and it seems to me that we should pause to think about that America. That America in which people left behind nearly all of their belongings and sometimes family to come to our nation. That America, where reformers worked tirelessly to make living and working conditions better. That America, where people worked back-breaking jobs to provide for their families. That America, where our patriotism was not based solely on the power of our military, but on what we could achieve together. Where we built skyscrapers that astonished the world, and where a majority of the population in some American cities was foreign born. These are the people who built our nation, and we do them a great disservice by disrespecting what they sacrificed so much to build. They endured racism and political corruption too, but through it all, they survived.

Few nations on earth would have weathered the storms that America has faced, and we still have a long way to go, but we are a great nation. Right now. At this moment, there are millions of people waiting in line to come into this country, from all over the world. I hear the saying, “If you don’t like America, you can leave.” Perhaps a better saying might be, “If you don’t like America, do your part to make it better.” The people who fled from global religious and ethnic persecution, economic disaster, and political strife throughout history did their part when they arrived here, and we enjoy standing on the foundations that they built with blood, sweat, and tears. The American Dream only dies if we all stop believing in it.<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt;">

America's highway system was expanding rapidly during this time period, and post-war spending on cars was on the rise. In many ways, it was the golden age of roadside Americana. Here are some fun cards I've found lately.

Too often, antique paper is thrown away by people who have no idea about its historical and monetary value. Fortunately, many items are rescued by those with a keen eye. When I saw this album online, I was skeptical because of the scant photos provided by the person listing it. They must have been in a hurry, because there were only a handful of blurry images. A gut feeling told me I should take a chance and buy the album, and so into my shopping cart it went. My instinct (full disclosure: my instinct is often wrong, just ask my wife about the piles of paper in my office) turned out to be spot on, and I was astounded when I opened the package to find an album stuffed full of over 100 photo postcards from the U.S.S. Mercury. Many are typical photos of distant boats, but some were truly incredible, a real glimpse into what it was like to be a sailor in a convoy crossing the Atlantic during World War One.

The ship was originally the Barbarossa, a German cruise ship, but was seized by the US Navy when we entered the war in 1917. In typical American fashion, the first thing we did was load it with guns. Sailors passed the time with boxing matches and games of tug-of-war on the deck.

Despite attempts to identify which group of African-American soldiers this is, I was unsuccessful. This is certainly a rare photo, though, and one of the best in the album. These troops were likely returning from service in France. America continued to struggle with racism during World War One, in fact there were race riots in many U.S, cities in 1919 as whites grew fearful that black soldiers returning home would demand equality.

While we won't see then sun regularly until at least April here, the early signs of the new season reminded me of some great Easter postcards I have. I am listing some on Ebay today, but will still have a bunch to spare. Easter cards are quite common, second only to Christmas in popularity in the early 1900s as far as I can tell. They are often beautifully embossed and decorated.
I went to my first ever auction last Friday and picked up an interesting box of ephemera. I missed out on a box of fantastic photos, but the bidding got over $300 and that was out of my comfort zone. I will post some pics of some of the items I got over the next few posts. Above are a few pictures of some great old newspapers from the 1800s.Stewarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07387000739596836168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3181562350256515743.post-53545063843197973802013-02-23T23:34:00.001-08:002013-02-23T23:35:13.864-08:00What the...?I enjoy a good mystery when it comes to postcards, and researching a new and unidentified card is half the fun for me. I got this one at the postcard show and cannot for the life of me find out anything about it. This is even more unusual because the location is right there on the card. Maybe a sleuth out there can find out this fishy mystery...what is going on here?
There are many great books on this same subject. One of my favorites shows before and after scenes of my hometown of Portland. I recently found a fantastic photo postcard of a small town in New Zealand, and then happened upon a photo of the same view today. Ohakune is a small ski town of a little over 1,000 inhabitants located at the southern end of the Tongariro National Park. It is close to the southern slope of an active volcano, Mount Ruapehuo.
Not only did I make a decent number of sales, I met some knowledgeable and informative dealers as well. You have to start somewhere and the only way to learn is through trial and error. A special thank-you to Frank at Paige Auction for taking me under his wing and helping me out with the table. Of course, I couldn't let my earnings sit in my pocket for too long, and I did pick up a few choice cards. A couple made it in under the wire for last minute additions to my book. It should be on schedule for an April release. I may sell a few of these to finance future acquisitions, but it's hard to let such great postcards go.
After a long period of Ottoman rule, the city passed to French control after World War One, and continued its role as one of the financial and trade centers of the Middle East. After Lebanon achieved its independence in 1943, it seemed Beirut would always continue being called the "Paris of the Middle East." Unfortunately, the Lebanese Civil War in 1975 devastated the city, and so vintage postcard views are highly collectible.

Thankfully, since the end of the war in 1990, the city has undergone reconstruction, and has regained its famed status as a tourist destination.
Early in my collecting, I threw my foreign cards aside. Lately, however, I have warmed to the images of faraway lands. I have a decent collection of Japanese and European cards, and am especially drawn to cards showing places in the Middle East. (Stay tuned for a Middle East postcard post soon.) The photo and print quality on these cards is typically great, as most of the best printers in the world were in Europe in the early 1900s, especially Germany. As a bonus, many old foreign cards have interesting stamps and postmarks!
This is a good example. Rather than discussing the obviously entertaining and interesting Roswell Auto Parade, the sender writes this, "...Have not see any men that looks very good to me." I guess the automobiles were prettier than the men in Roswell.
These are the most interesting to me, because they represent a true treasure hunt. I unearthed this postcard from Norway, and it's a great example of how postcards often become art. Someone has hand-colored the black and white card, a not uncommon practice. While this one is actually sent from Norway, many American postcards from the Midwest are written in Norwegian, Swedish, etc., reflecting our immigrant past. I have also found a number of early 1900s American photo postcards with people wearing similar things as this woman. This is probably from the early 1900s, although the postmark is impossible to make out.
Sometimes, especially with foreign cards, I have a tough time with this. Google translate is a great tool, but when it comes to Asian languages that use different alphabets and characters, I have a very hard time. So, I am posting pictures of some new cards I got, in the hope that someone will be able to tell me:

1. What country these cards are from.
2. When they were sent.
3. What they say.

If anyone knows of anyone who reads Chinese or Japanese, your help would be greatly appreciated!
PS - I apologize if the photos are upside down!
Postcards showing people in their occupational clothing are not very unusual, and it's not particularly hard to find images of train conductors, police, etc. I like the confident look that these two have, they seem pretty self-assured.
It was one of those lucky finds that doesn't come along often. The hunt is half the fun for me, so I get a rush when I find an unusual or rare card at an affordable price. I also got the first printed postcard reproduction for my book in the mail on Friday, so I will be posting a Kickstarter video update soon for those that contributed to show it off! I am hoping to get the book rolled out in March, but it might be April before it's done.
They promised weight loss, beauty, and unrealistic health benefits with no real consequences. For the most part, they got away with this because of very lax government regulation of food and drugs. It wasn't until Upton Sinclair's muckraking expose The Jungle, written in 1906, that the government felt pressured to create more stringent regulations. The Pure Foods Act passed in 1906, and became the Food and Drug Administration in the 1930s. The reign of the snake oil salesman was over. We can still get a chuckle out of these product advertisements from the 1800s though. Here is a trade card for Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup, sure to cure your baby's teething pain. Do we really want to know what was in it? I'll bet it was flammable!
These photos are such a raw glimpse into how people made their living in the early 1900s. Granted, many of the photos are posed, but it is still easy to imagine these men maintaining the trains in the yard in Minnesota.
Commonly known as personification, this term refers to attributing human characteristics to non-human things, such as animals, gods, or even the weather. This was very popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and continues to be used frequently in political cartoons today. Almost everyone recognizes the anthropomorphic elephant and donkey of the Republicans and Democrats. Here are a few fun examples, but there are a lot more where these came from.
One of my goals for 2013 is to put some quality time into Artful Geographic. My photo postcard book should be published by April, and with it will come a number of new products to renew the e-shelves in my Etsy store! Look for some new postcards and cards starting in May. In the meantime, I will try to get back to posting more regularly. Happy 2013!Stewarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07387000739596836168noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3181562350256515743.post-37634976194064528082012-12-01T09:42:00.000-08:002012-12-01T09:42:12.731-08:00PostcrossingAs a child, I got caught up in the fad of chain letters. The concept was pretty straight forward: You wrote a letter to X amount of people, and then, theoretically, you would get responses from all over the world. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not so much. I forgot all about the fun and excitement of getting a letter from a stranger, with a unique and interesting stamp, and a note from across the oceans. Then, I found Postcrossing! This is a great website that matches up people all around the world who are interested in postcards and friendly conversation.

Here's how it works:
1. You request an address from Postcrossing.
2. They send you a unique code to put on the postcard with your message.
3. You mail it, and your recipient enters the code.
4. Once the postcard is registered, Postcrossing's system will automatically send your address to someone around the world, and they will send you a postcard!

Here are a few of the postcards that I have received under the username ArtfulGeographic:
You can write a message in your profile telling senders what kind of postcards you like best. I find I often send postacrds with lighthouses from the Oregon Coast, and receive cool reproductions of old cards like these. Hopefully everyone gets something they want.

I lost track of my Postcrossing account when we moved, but now that we are in our new house, I can start back up. Look for some new Postcrossings from time to time, and check it out for yourself!
I promise to get back to blogging more regularly soon. We have a 5 day weekend next week, and I plan on focusing on my postcard book project. My goal is to have my Kickstarter video and information done by the end of next weekend, and launch the project on Kickstarter around December 16th. Depending on interest in the project, I could have a finished book by the end of April or earlier. I will post a link to the Kickstarter project on here as soon as it's live.

If you have never looked at Kickstarter, it's an awesome resource for artists and creative people who want to fund their projects in a unique way. For some reason it reminded me of this photo that I found earlier this year.
